How Whitney Wolfe Herd Came To Found Bumble

Whitney Wolfe Herd is an entrepreneur in the tech industry who founded Bumble on September 1, 2014. Bumble is now one of the most popular dating app in the world with many women preferring to use it over other dating apps. The reason for this is that only they can initiate contact with others which means they can safely use the app without being endlessly harassed by nearby men sending them messages.

Bumble is based in Houston, Texas. Whitney Wolfe Herd was just 24 years old when she established Bumble. She is the chief executive officer of Bumble which means she guides the overall strategic vision of this company. One of the things she is best known for is not really caring at all about the way people are “supposed” to go about things. She does things the way she feels is best even if it goes against the established narrative of how people and companies operate.

Whitney Wolfe Herd was earlier the co-founder of Tinder but the relationship didn’t work out. She felt attacked by the experience and so decided launching a new app would be the way to go. She wanted to establish an app based on her own experiences using dating apps. She came up with the idea of Merci which would be a social network that only allowed women to join. It would be based on these women acting on their best behavior and with kindness.

While Whitney Wolfe was working on this idea she was contacted by Andrey Andreev, an entrepreneur who founded Badoo which is the world’s biggest dating platform. He wanted her to become the chief marketing officer of her company as it turns out. She didn’t want anything to do with this, particularly as it meant moving to London. He helped her with the idea of Merci, though, and convinced her to make it a dating app. He also provided her with the funding she needed and the help of his company’s technical team. The rest, as they say, is history.

Whitney Wolfe Herd is a graduate of Southern Methodist University where she graduated with a degree in international relations. In her personal life she married in October 2017 and her husband is Michael Herd. They got married on the coast of Spain and as she is often asked, no she did not meet her husband through Bumble.
